JFK and the Bay of PigsJohn F. Kennedy was the youngest president in the History of the United States. His appearance gained him many voters. One of his first actions as the president was ordering the invasion of the Bay of Pigs. This US led invasion aimed to overthrow Cuba's new Communist government. Unfortunately, this invasion was unsuccessful, and worsened US-Cuba relations.
At the same time, Nikita Khrushchev became leader in Russia. He took over after Stalin died. Khrushchev also came from a military background. Both countries were under a time of much change as the height of the Cold War approached. http://latinamericanstudies.org/bay-of-pigs/2506-prisoners-5.jpg

Cuban Missile Crisis. The Cuban Missile Crisis is often considered to be the closest the world has reached to a World War III. The height of tensions during the Cold War was when the US discovered Russian missiles in Cuba. These missiles could reach most of the Continental United States. This discovery created one of the tensest periods in the US. The US immediately set up a 'quarantine zone' to stop Soviet ships from reaching Cuba.
After some time, Khrushchev sent President Kennedy a letter which outlined steps to remove the Soviet Missiles from Cuba. In return for this, Khrushchev asked that the Jupiter missiles be removed from Turkey, and later Italy. JFK agreed to those terms, but asked that the missiles be kept a secret. Both parties agreed to the terms, and Cuban missiles were removed. The Jupiter missiles were also removed from Turkey. Khrushchev took the blow as the weaker nation for removing the missiles, http://www.kingsacademy.com/mhodges/03_The-World-since-1900/11_The-Bewildering-60s/pictures/Soviet-missile-bases-in-Cuba_1962.jpg

Lyndon B. Johnson's Great SocietyOn November 22, 1963, JFK was assassinated. By the same day, Lyndon B. Johnson had already been sworn into office. Lyndon's presidency was the greatest period of change since Roosevelt's New Deal. His changes still affects us today. He was known for his "Great Society."
LBJ's "Great Society" consisted of many changes. One of the first things he pushed for as the president was the Civil Rights Bill. This Bill banned discrimination based on Race or Gender everywhere. Next, he created the Peace Corps, which helped to form a system of voluntary work everywhere in the US. He also pushed for the Voting Rights Act, which banned Literacy tests (Often performed in the South to 'prove' blacks were incompetent to vote). LBJ also declared a "war on poverty" which aimed to improve the lives of Americans. The Immigration Act ended discriminatory immigration quotas, which blocked many from entering the the US. |
Hollywood and Historical AccuracyHollywood movies often include Historical themes. However, because of the nature of these movies, they are not always completely historically accurate. Rather, changes are made to the actual events to create the best possible plot.
One 'Case Study' is the Movie '13 Days.' This depicts the Cuban Missile Crisis. However, many things that happened in real life, did not happen, or happened in a different way to create the best possible movie. For example, the American public did not know about Jupiter Missiles stationed in Turkey at the time. However, in the movie, many people knew and protested the Jupiter missiles that they should not have known about. This combined with other inconsistencies shows that either the movie's creator did not do enough research, or simply altered events to create a better story. |
